There are some lovely Ardmore bottlings from independent bottlers. Sometimes I'm not sure if the peat comes from ex-Laphroaig casks or is from the original distiller. But it gives the Ardmore its interesting character. This particular bottling is from Thompson Brothers, who married two hogsheads from 1998 and 1999. So the whisky is 25 years old, which doesn't make it cheap. At the end of 2025, it will be available in a few shops for around €235. Not in my price range – but I did manage to get a sample… glen-efze.de

Unfortunately only a small sample, but what I got was really very good. The age, the quality and the flavors were there, high-quality and clean.

Wispy smoke and charred pork belly met herbal perilla and sesame seeds— I was at a Korean barbecue joint, the table grill in action. More caramelized sweet marinades lingered in the background with grass, almost green onion like, hot metal, and antiseptic wipes. Medium to light-bodied on the palate with familiar notions of charred sugars, fats, and grass, but with more fruits and a sharper acrid quality than the aroma. Tinned pineapple caramelizing on a hot grill top arrived with mugwort and perilla as herbal spices turned toward grass and soot. Less meaty than the aroma, the palate shifted toward raspberry and vanilla syrups, but with a constant acrid char in motion amongst churning antiseptic wipes and lemon. The finish was medium-length and quiet with a touch of peppery spirit, pithy citrus, and soot. This verged on greatness, but it settled for just being really good— but all that is quibbling when the whisky is delightful. The aroma and palate were rather discordant as they initially developed and then lost overlapping elements, while the finish was not particularly strong. It was a wonderfully tasty whisky, but the flavor notes lacked distinctiveness and the richness that could elevate the experience. Overall, I have been a bit entranced by these older Ardmore lately and this was enjoyable, even if it felt a notch below some of the others.

Fair pricing for what it is, interesting notes but ultimately an interesting and very complex whisky with many faces. A very nice facet of the interesting peat character of Ardmore is reflected and an enjoyable experience is created. The olive oil preserved fish note came through so clearly that it shocked the first nose. A beautiful and most importantly interesting whisky. Price performance: Good Would I buy it again?: Most likely yes, it offers a very interesting character to the drinker, I think the ideal would be to split it 50%-50%.

Нос	88	A medicinal, mossy peat. A strange note that I can't quite identify: spinach and white beans or boiled beans without tomato paste on one side. A fishy side; "sardines" preserved in olive oil, smoked haddock are further back. Fennel. The olive oil note is really strong. Maybe spoiled butter. Earthiness from peat. It definitely doesn't make you think of it as ash or coal at first. Maybe a farmyard note is taken if you think of it like the rind of a rustic cheese like camembert. Lightly caramelized base notes over time. Green tomatoes, tomato peel. It turns out there was vanilla and black pepper at the bottom! The peat is quite intense for its age. A metallic back note. Mate. Definitely a very interesting nose, I didn't quite understand whether I liked it or not, and I didn't know what to rate it. It's not bad, don't get me wrong, I just didn't understand if it was just for me. It's definitely very complex.
Вкус	89	High body on the palate. Oily mouthfeel. Intense peat. BBQ: charcoal and ash emerge. Burnt leaves. Quite sweet: above medium sweetness. BBQ pineapple. And yellow fruits (peach etc). There is definitely a vegetal side, and interestingly an umami side. Earthiness, clay. Seashells. Although I understand the comparison to laphroaig in my official tasting notes, it is very clearly distinct in some aspects and others. It is clearly ripe, and the peat has reduced its bite, but it is definitely still there. There is a sweet cake-like side at the bottom, but it is not clear what kind of cake it is from the peat. A toasty malt note at the very back, like chocolate malt. Manuka smoke. Barbecued fish glazed with Manuka honey. Really interesting and enjoyable!
Финиш	89	A round but tangled finish. It starts with burnt marshmallow and wood fire aromas, passes through slightly sour yellow fruits and at the very end of the finish, slightly funky, spoiled yellow fruits; apricot or peach coming out of lambic maceration and ends with a salty, slightly medicinal and herbal finish. The finish is actually long enough to be called long but the decreasing intensity can make it feel shorter. Although it feels like it will never be complex at first, the finish surprises. There is again the grilled fish side that is well absorbed by smoke. Burnt leaves. Nice finish.

A very dense and rich whisky, the center of the composition is a struggle between creamy sweetness and various industrial-mineral notes, a wide palette, good depth, a lot of shades and halftones, but, although I love this profile, I would not recommend this release to a wide range of connoisseurs, the dirty shades are too strong, too sharp and prickly, and the sweetness is also at a high level, but they do not achieve any kind of harmony, constantly vying for primacy with each other. Plus, a lot of tart oak appears during the development, so the malt certainly turned out to be interesting, but niche.
