Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes

Golden color. Light oiliness.

Is it the Pulteney I know and love? No. Is it a good whisky? Absolutely.

I'm surprised. Positive. The nose is adorable. 85 points.

I like it quite a bit, but the finish is a bit too bitter for my taste.

Malty, a bit fake. The nose is good, but the taste is not quite right. It also has something perfumed and should probably be longer in it. Lt. Destilleriw about 12 years, but I think there are also deitlixh younger ones in there

Fortunately, they at Pulteney were pleasantly surprised by the results. C: More basic with water, but overall, this works very well – solid Old Pulteney with a twist.

A very nice, spicy bottling that shows its (probable) youth. If you can get it cheaply for around €50, you can buy it without hesitation.

Even young whiskies can be delicious if they're aged in good casks. Unfortunately, this one isn't. (Even though Old Pulteney is actually one of my favorite distilleries.)

Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes, 46%. 30ml sample consumed July 2024. Aroma - pink mice sweets becoming more raspberry cheesecake. Body - lightly oily. Taste – wine cask is mercifully integrated here. Quite nicely done. Some tangy berry fruit but the biscuity wood compensates. Prickle of salt in finish. Okay stuff. 3.4/81

Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes, 46% alc. Original bottling (2022, Coastal Series). Aging: Bourbon casks, finished in Pineau des Charentes wine casks Nose: Juicy orange wedges in diluted honey, along with apricot jam and peach liqueur. This creamy sweetness lingers quite a long time in the glass, the Pulteney needs a lot of time to open up further. There is then some tree resin and a light wood spice, I can also smell a delicate herbal note. Palate: The honey has a stronger effect, peanuts are added, then roasted almonds and the fruit aromas on the nose. The spices seem much stronger, some nutmeg and pepper, there is also a hint of cinnamon. The oak wood has an intense effect and contributes to bitter fir trees. Finish: Medium length, creamy sweetness meets bitter caramel, latte and strong spices. Conclusion: A delicious whisky, certainly, creamy sweet anyway. But the "Maritime Malt" is no longer recognizable, the post-maturation has settled too much on the whisky. Well-crafted daily dram. 83/100 points (2022).

Oxygen is definitely good for him, both in the glass and in the bottle. The wine notes are noticeable but subtle in the background. It is reminiscent of the old 12 with 43% and yet is completely different. The distillery character only comes through to a limited extent. You don't really know whether the combination fits or not. It's not wrong or wrong, but somehow it's not entirely coherent either. In the end, the wine comes through strongest in the finish, with slightly sour notes.

Vertical tasting of WB116461 - Old Pulteney 18-year-old - 86 WB128124 - Old Pulteney 16-year-old - 84 WB218030 - Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes - 82 S 6.5 Very much a dessert dram. Cask forward. Nothing wrong but coastal jammy whisky is not exactly my cup of tea. It's lacking the delicacy Old Pulteney usually offers.

[January 2022] What a strange combo! I guess most people do not even know what "Pineau des Charentes" wine taste all about, let alone a whisky finished in such strange casks... ..which is truly strange, indeed. The malt is clearly too young ("paedophil"), and the wine cannot compensate for this. Another experiment which was bound to fail (except for the controllers who want to generate as much money as possible in as short time as possible). Try a dram first, before buying a bottle...

Nose: At first sniff, the nose is enveloped by a gentle hint of oats, mixed with a subtle note of glue. But suddenly a fruity explosion spreads out, like a sun-drenched vineyard in late summer. Grapes dance in the scent, accompanied by a hint of wine and the tempting sweetness of fruit gums. But beneath this cheerful fruitiness lies a light, mysterious mustiness that makes you curious, while a hint of gum plays around the senses. Taste: The first sip is like a visit to a vineyard, with pepper notes that tickle the palate. But suddenly a wave of smoke breaks through, wild and biting like a raging thunderstorm. With each subsequent sip, a gentler side of this whisky is revealed, especially with a little water. The sweet smoke becomes milder, almost like the smell of a campfire on the beach. Pepper and salt dance on the tongue, while an extremely oily texture caresses the mouth

EYE/NOSE Strong golden hue that spontaneously reminds me of mead. Also in the nose I immediately have the scent of a spicy, well-matured mead, certainly also influenced by the eye. Then green pepper, orange tea, apricot jam and a kind of woody-balsamic notes. Are there walnuts too? In any case, also nutty flavors. Floral notes and wax join later. I write down rose petals. And the waxy? Beekeepers sometimes sell self-rolled beeswax candles at Christmas markets, that's about it. PALATE Pleasant velvety mouthfeel. At the beginning a slightly ethereal, almost cooling character, which then, as soon as the alcohol sets in with its 46% ABV, has a warming but never pungent effect. good balance Here, too, I find the spicy, not overly sweet honey wine from the nose. Very occasionally, barrel-aged mead can also be found at medieval markets, which sometimes transports pleasant aromas of wood in addition to the honey sweetness. This is where our Pineau put me. It remains fruity and also a bit mineral, but unlike other Old Pulteneys I've tasted in the recent past. Amarettini and dark chocolate follow on the palate. Not extremely cocoa or dry, but creamy and tasty. FINISH/CONCLUSION The aftertaste is actually not quite as long as I had imagined based on the intense taste. Of course, the ubiquitous vinous honey notes remain. Towards the end it becomes almond and again a bit chocolatey. No real misses. Not bitter, woody or even sulphurous. When I first tasted it, I thought it had sulphur, but this seems to be more of a spicy oak influence, as the notes do not weigh down the tongue uncomfortably and the supposed sulfur does not float to the surface even when water is added. Overall a very round, sweet Old Pulteney. Do I miss the salty-maritime, i.e. the defining basic character of the Old Pulteneys, which I appreciate so much, especially on the 12yo? Well, it would probably have been the icing on the cake. However, the malt has its own character, which, as is so often the case with modern sherry, port or sweet wine storage, is strongly barrel-driven. It took a little while in the glass and a while for me to appreciate this malt. But this is very good and very unique. Delicate and balanced. I have not had good luck with wine barrel finished malts like this one. This is an exception. Quite good

Quite sharp for 46%. The alcohol dominates for me. Indicated fruitiness, with a maritime influence. 61-70 - Okay, but not more than 1 dram

Color gold - a single malt with a very powerful character, - lots of spice, tobacco and oak - a quite complex original bottling - good, but not a candidate from the 3-4 in the evening Glasses are enjoyed, more of an intense pleasure whisky - for 80 - 90€ you can't complain, you don't have to have, but if you are welcome to have access, you have one special direction in the office / bar
