Sutherland 5 Year Old, Thompson Bros, 2023 edition, 48.5%. 25ml sample from HopScotch, consumed Feb 2025. A lovely washed-out dark golden shade. Aroma of chargrilled apple (if that’s a thing), light melon esters coming through the charcoal. Becoming more lemongrass-like, pineapple cube sweets and again the faint watermelon coming through the now buttery oak. A light aroma, but plenty going on and it evolves. Body is moderately oily. Good weighty body. Taste is spicy and buttery oak, a fair whack of ginger in the middle and waxy somewhat astringent lemon rind, salty throughout. The flavours in the mid-palate continue on into the finish with a salty spiritous bite. The astringent woody refill vibes lingering on. Pretty decent stuff. I’ve never had a Dornoch, so I’m not sure what if anything I can detect from the distillery, but you can tell this is over 80% Clynelish for sure. Drinks like a young Clynelish. Good stuff – above average, with the body impressing most of all. 3.525/84

These are the details of this bottling's composition. What makes this whisky interesting isn't the teaspoon of Brora, but rather the proportion of Dornoch whisky. This Thompson Brothers whisky, from the small distillery on the grounds of Dornoch Castle, is hard to come by due to the small quantities. The younger Sutherland sibling in this blend shines through more in this expression than it did in the predecessor. This gives a very nice and fresh character on the nose, with orange fruit in abundance. The mouthfeel is a bit harsh, to be honest, and gives the impression that the age on this blend isn't much higher because of the addition of the older malts. It feels a bit unbalanced and therefor also somewhat underwhelming. The expressive nose is the attraction of this bottling.

A limited edition blend with a built-in/calculated future, this one sold out in a flash and for good reason. C: . Thompson Bros [second edition] Sutherland blended malt is a raw/natural yet creatively crafted number consisting of Clynelish, Dornoch, and teaspooned Brora – hence, a price tag of £85+. Un-unlikeable and thoroughly recommended.

Нос	88	A bit of sherry influence it seems, muscular, sort of old coin/electronics vibes, chocolate, yogurt, panda, ancho Chile, nutmeg, something savory, nougat. Nice!
Вкус	86	A little thin. Soft, sweet, mild fruits, becoming ver nicely spicy, earth, almost peaty.
Финиш	85	Not long, not as youthful as the 2024 version, goes on to get a bit stale, bitter, and ashy.

The nose immediately catches the fact that there is no clerical vegetable, and there is dust and light notes of ash. A little fruity sweetness, honey, yellow pears, bananas. The taste is unusually tart and sour, but also rather difficult. I am sure that there are older spirits in the batch. More fruity licorice emerges over time. There is no impression that he is completely young and raw.

Blend of 5yo Dornoch, older Clynelish and (a little bit of) much, much older Brora. Sensational dram that was the (surprise) highlight of the Whisky Fringe for me. Incredible balance and way, way too drinkable!

Way overpriced for a 5 year old blend. Apparently Highland distilleries, unnamed, and youngest cask 5 years. Color either bourbon or sherry casks, multiple uses. My take: worth $39.99, not more! Sold out for $69.99, close enough to my take! Tried again September 2026. Borderline. Bunch of casks thrown together to get rid of them.
