Glenturret 1990 DeDr

Tropical fruits par excellence, a great Glenturret: Ripe mango, gooseberries, passion fruit, bananas, and candied oranges. A wonderfully creamy mouthfeel. Light, sugary oak spice, along with a touch of vanilla and a lovely waxy note. Impressive depth of flavor, even if it fades rather quickly. On the palate, this Glenturret is a real winner if you love tropical aromas in whisky. Extremely good cask selection, Mr. MacRaild!

Whilst my eye catches sight of a Bunna 21yo. “No no”, she says. “This is your light, delicate breakfast dram”. Quite right! N: Light and delicate indeed, just as the high age and low ABV suggest. Malty, lemon-sweet, this compelling Turret speaks in whispers. T: As coppery as it is dunnage-y, beyond the soft but flavourful rockbed of malt & citrus, come more whispers that tell of delicate moving parts. F: Determined to hold on to its profiled nature, the finish, surprisingly, is far more clearly defined, but it doesn’t want for even a drop of water. C: In the wrong setting/time of day/order would be a crime; a bottle to lament after every last loving drop is gone.

Liquid honey, waxed wood, malted cereals, fir resin, spring freshness, buttery brioche, subtle floral notes. Creamy citrus, fresh tropical fruits, a hint of iodine, hand cream. Light minerality. On the palate, it's creamy and oily, with elegant oak, egg yolk, yellow plums, then fairly prominent spices, nutmeg, clove. A very long but not particularly powerful finish, candied mirabelle plums, ripe bananas, cracked wheat, more wax, cookie dough, a drop of caramel. An old school whisky this. After attending the masterclass from Angus, I straight away bought a bottle at the booth. Almost 50% levels still. Austere. But fresh. Just 41.5% ABV but vibrant & expressive. A clean expression of the oldest distillery in the world. A small rug, loosened dress, & a pour of this whisky.. will be a good combination for a whole night’s tasting. I have always felt 1988 is the greatest year for Glenturret. This one’s 1990. I reckon, it challenges the 1988 greats, and almost eclipses them in some ways. One of the finest distillates human hands produced. An unmuddled, pristine, pure, simple, gargantuan-ly fruity Glenturret.

Doughy on the nose, sharp and tingling on the palate - very short and fruity finish.

Decadent Drinks: WHISKYLAND TOURIST ANNOUNCEMENT The oldest, most delicate whiskies, often need to be specially cracked open and disgorged directly into tasting glass. This is an activity usually confined to the Surrealism Dunnage; it's lower risk when anything can happen... This particular case originates from a 1990 Glenturret, aged 35 years in a refill hogshead and rescued at what experts are describing as “the absolute last sensible moment”. Bottled at a naturally low strength, it remains remarkably intact, if slightly… dreamlike. Reports from the Surrealism Dunnage suggest a profile of soft waxes, mineral oils, white and yellow fruits, and an unusual sense of calm. Several tasters have compared the experience to drinking extremely fine, aged white wine, although none have been able to fully explain why. Handling instructions are minimal. Open carefully. Pour gently. Sit down if required. And if, at any point, you find yourself quietly observing your own hands and feeling unusually content about it, please be reassured.
