Raisins, candied fruits, oranges and light spicy notes (vanilla, nutmeg, some ginger), leather and a hint of citrus infuse from the nose to the palate to the medium-long finish. A true pleasure to have in the glass! 88+ points

This is very pleasant to drink, it's one of the Glenrothes that does not go into any extreme which means it's actually very balanced. I like this one pretty much.
Dry, fruity, mild. Some forest honey and dried dates. The age and complexity can only be felt very subtly in the background. I would have expected a lot more. Not really spectacular, on the contrary and even a disappointment for the age and price.

This one was my first Glenrothes directly imported from Scotland by a friend. Fortunately it was this one because this is still the old style. Lots of fruits and oranges with deep oak wood and rather oily and smooth. No butterscotch at all. This is fantastic! From 1989 on the Glenrothes started to have the typical butterscotch notes. I think if I had first one of the new style I would not have built up my Glenrothes collection.

Didn’t recognize this as a Glenrothes to be honest. It had a nice musty and old woody layer on top of the raisins, chocolate, cherries, raspberries and red berries. Also some nice spices to complement the whole. But not that sometimes dirty milky aroma that can be found in Glenrothes. Highly recommended and quite a body for just 43 abv.
Described by Glenrothes` Brand Heritage Director, Ronnie Cox as "a fantastic reminder of how beautifully The Glenrothes ripens from vibrant, zesty youth to rich, full-bodied maturity." This is a fabulous whisky from Glenrothes, aged for more than 20 years in a mix of Spanish sherry wood and American oak casks.

Tasting Notes by Dave Broom for Whisky AdvocateThe hue is deep amber and the nose is equally resonant and rich. This is Glenrothes in its most muscular guise, so that while you have the normal layers of fruity complexity, there is an extra weight. Think of citrus peels, sticky dates, walnuts, and fruit leather. The palate is soft and rolling with light tannin. For me, it`s at its best au naturel. 88 Points

This is also 43% fun! Make sure you let yourself breathe sufficiently! This shows which great barrels were still used in 1988. Paxarette? Maybe. In any case, a perfect pre-allocation and great wood. I'm glad to have found a replacement bottle now.

Vintages from the 1970`s and 1980`s are increasingly hard to come by. The Vintage 1988 is of that rare breed. Never before bottled the Vintage has benefited from more than two decades maturing in a combination of Spanish and American oak; previously seasoned with both sherry and whisky. The combination gives the citrus notes a delicious cooked orange flavour and plenty of fruit as well which are evident on the nose and the palate. Had this one in a blind tasting. Clearly an older whisky and sherrycask influence, but lacked some power to impress. Especially the finish was a bit disappointing. Nice experience to have tasted this one though.

Aroma: Malt, honey, candied flower and blackcurrant jam, a bit of wet wood, chocolate candy with liquor, barberry candy, heating, thawed marshmallows, warm and slightly burnt ice cream appear. Nonspiritious. Taste: Orange peel, malt, a lot of raw wood, dates, mushroom tincture. Unsweetened, astringent. Aftertaste: Medium. Citrus peels, dry malt, crust of black bread, at the end a little bit of dark chocolate and dryness, a lot of dryness. Total: The aroma was just a fairy tale expecting an explosion in taste, but the taste and aftertaste do not at all look like aroma as if they were two different whiskys, after a sip it seems that he is tired even though so frisky in aroma.

Part of the first ‘HetWhiskyForum Thuisfestival’! Tasting note is in dutch and is based on the available 2cl. A great example of: if you knew what it was a Glenrothes, you could say ‘yeah, obviously’, if you didn’t know it was a Glenrothes one could be very surprised.
Perfect dram! Nice tones of orange !
