Glenturret 10-year-old - Peat Smoked

Peaty, smoky and bit chemical with elements of fresh fruits.

A powerful entry with clearly noticeable peat smoke, yet not overpowering, rather earthy and slightly dirty. A subtle metallic note lends the aroma an almost industrial charm, which is not overpowering thanks to the pleasantly integrated alcohol. Behind this, there are musty cereal notes reminiscent of wet malt, lending depth and a certain rusticity to the character. Light citrus fruits provide freshness, while a hint of vanilla adds a delicate sweetness and balance. On the palate, the initial impression is of a pleasant sweetness, which is quickly replaced by strong, spicy elements. Pepper and spices dominate the mouthfeel, complemented by the present peat smoke that develops evenly. Salty hints bring a maritime freshness into play, which, together with the oak spice, forms a stable, almost bitter base. The combination of smoke, salt, and spice results in a complex and exciting taste experience. The finish is long-lasting and pleasantly warming. Lemon notes add further freshness before salted caramel slowly takes over, creating a gentle, sweet-salty complexity. The oak spice remains present and provides structure without being overpowering. A subtle veil of smoke accompanies the finish. The Glenturret 10 Years Old Peat Smoked is an interesting example of a peated Highland malt that stands out pleasantly from the classic Islay style. The smoke is present, but not overt – rather subtle, earthy and complex. The whisky cleverly plays with contrasts: sweetness meets salt, smoke meets citrus, spice meets soft vanilla. Particularly exciting is the slightly “dirty” nose with metallic and musty grain accents, which gives the whisky a certain depth and individuality. The alcohol is well integrated, the aromas cleanly balanced – nothing seems raw or immature. However, the whisky does seem very monotonous and unapproachable.

Glenturret’s marketing has worked on me. Not in that it makes me want to immediately buy it, but in the sense that the Lalique bottle and general framing has tricked my brain into thinking it's a dainty, delicate liquid, despite repeated experiences to the contrary. So it's either down to the strength of their brainwashing, or to my continued inability to learn, that I was surprised again, when it turned out to be an endearingly boisterous peat and sherry mix with the subtlety of a Great Dane puppy. The lack of complexity is easily made up for by the excellent texture and the ability of the liquid to hold and prolong the limited but enjoyable flavours it does have. I really like peated Glenturret, and it is a crying shame that they are discontinuing the use of it. Highland and Speyside peat are both way underrated

Glenturret 10 Years Peat Smoked, 50% alc. Original bottling (release 2021). Aging: European and American oak barrels Nose: fire and smoke, fairly clear and distinct. Campfire, peat smoke and marinated meat, then straight away mild citrus fruits. Behind it I find caramel, damp forest floor and grass, some eucalyptus and a cellar smell. It goes back to the campfire, then maritime aromas, sea salt and flotsam mix. Palate: Quite intense and rich in aromas, slightly oily consistency. Lots of peat smoke, some ash. Dark chocolate with sea salt, spicy jam, fresh oak and pepper. Also charred bread, caramel and coffee beans. Finish: Medium to long, the emphasis is on decaying peat smoke and black pepper. Conclusion: I would not have expected that. Pleasant complexity without overwhelming, the peat smoke really suits this Glenturret very well. It gets plus points for the increased drinking strength, and it is neither colored nor cold-filtered. A nice development. 85/100 points (2021) www.notesofmalt.com

The smoke is very noticeable when you first pour it, but mellows significantly after some time revealing lemon yoghurt, subtle citrus and tropical fruits. A few drops of water emphasise the fruits even further and reveal some creamy vanilla. The smoke becomes really subtle. Very nice mouthfeel. This is a tasty, easy drinking peated dram.

Glenturret also produces smoky whiskies, independently bottled called Ruadh Maor and can be quite good. This appears in the new Core Range and is the 2021 release. 50% vol., not chill-filtered, undyed - that's how whisky should be. I really liked the 12-year-old, unpeated from the 2021 release.
