Distilled in 1949 in keeping with his exacting instruction, this remarkable whisky was bottled in 2022. It was then unveiled in 2024 as part of The Macallan’s 200th-anniversary celebrations. Sumptuous and densely layered, the nose opens with a rich, spiced compote of dusky red fruits. Beneath this, nutmeg and cinnamon bark notes emerge, complemented by hints of lacquered oak furniture. The palate is silken and expansive, with a luxurious interplay of black cherry conserve, freshly baked almond croissants, velvety cocoa, and spiced ginger cake. The finish is graceful and resonant, unfolding slowly and leisurely. Nutty and spiced, with a cool wisp of incense, it lingers with parting notes of old library books, dried petals and soft peat smoke. Rob Whitehead, Spirits Buyer, Berry Bros. & Rudd
