for me the winner of the Diageo special releases 2023

A pleasant dram where the cask finish has added a bit of funk I suspect - not sure on the price though. Although this is an NAS I suspect there is a bit of age to it, perhaps a teen. Worth trying a dram - if you buy a bottle it's as much for the packaging as the contents.
Light golden color. Slight oiliness.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2025/11/06/whisky-show-2025-old-faithfuls/ C: A complex cask composition involving an ex-Kanosuke & ex-Pinot Noir cask finish helps bring a youthful, vibrant, sugary, strong [natural cask strength] whisky to the fore. And yet, it’s instantly forgettable in the moment.
N: The nose starts darkly sweet on fruit and cuberdons, but rather subdued. As if the Beast has been tamed. Pureed out, if you know what I mean. Kaizen! S: But on the tongue… let the Beast go! A sticky explosion that reminds him of the Mortlach of times gone by. Very old school and very good. You can almost chew it. F: The finish is long and satisfying. C: Wow, this may be expensive - especially considering it doesn't have an age statement - but it's a masterpiece. The poster boy for NAS whisky, I think.
The Mortlach The Katana’s Edge is a bit atypical.
It's strange that the whiskys in this year's Diageo releases, which do not have an age statement, are so expensive... Too expensive for me. A drop of water.. Aroma more woody notes, otherwise unchanged The taste is smoother, creamier, more fruity, less bitter notes. Definitely a "+" Finish is sweeter, milder, plums in compote, sugar syrup, lots of ripe melons, less bitterness "+"

I really like it, intense sweetness.
Mortlach 0 finish at €300 and so on, are you crazy???
S 7 The alcohol pungency is slightly overwhelming but the flavour profile is rich and sophisticated. Fairly overpriced but better composed than 2024 SR. 5 drops of water per 25ml is good enough, anymore will show the brutal reality of how young the vatting is.

Fresh sugary dark red fruits. Toasted oak with a hint of garden mint. Honey and new copper. Vanilla cream on sponge cake. Water revealed the nutty note hidden behind the sweetness. Fresh sugar cane. Raisin and sultana panettone. |

Creamy and chewy mouthfeel. Dark plum and blackcurrant syrup. A drop of mint extract in my meaty malt, interesting. Water makes the landing a lot more spicier, black pepper, chili flakes, nutmegs. The more water added the more young notes that surfaced, alcohol burn and barley sugar. |

Mid, moderately dry finish. Still a touch metallic. Malt loaf. Red fruits with skins on. |
A delicious whisky, but like last year, absolutely outrageous pricing for a NAS.
Fruity hard candies provided currants and blackberries with hints of thyme and mint in the background— the candy store was open, and directed me toward sweeter fare as nougat, fudge, and butterscotch chews appeared. A touch of licorice and cherry left me thinking Red Vines and movie theater snacks, while some peppery spirit helped clear my sinuses. Medium-bodied and syrupy, the flavor profile began with a wave of sticky cherry and strawberry candies or sodas and ended with a peppery spirited finale. In between I found more nougat studded with almonds and butterscotch candies— perhaps a touch of Turkish delight or currant gummies at times. The finish was medium-length with subtle fruity candies and plenty of spirited pepper. At first, I thought this was marginally better than the 2022 release, but concluded that it was worse. It was more spirited and peppery, especially on the finish, and that detracted from the overall experience, even if the flavors were generally more cohesive. This felt safer than the 2022, and therefore much less interesting. I will give this some more credit, I thought it was great in a highball— but considering the price, that feels like small consolation.
