It is a little better than some special bottlings of recent years, but by no means a high-flyer. The reduced peat smoke is surprising, as is the quite smooth feeling on the tongue.

Fresh cookie dough, yeast plait, raisins and figs, plus a not-too-strong note of peat smoke that seems fruity, mild and somewhat tame. Smoked wine gums, slightly herbal. It may be the influence of the Sauternes barrels, which otherwise do not have much of an impact on the aroma here, that it comes across as tamed on the nose and hardly like an Ardbeg. |

A mild and comparatively sweet start. Raisins, plums, blueberries, at the back of the throat there is peat smoke, which is not very intense but rather subdued - seems like it has been slowed down. Some dried seaweed, a herbal mixture, wildflower honey. |

Not particularly long, not even the peat smoke note lasts long. Normally, an Ardbeg should have a lemon ashtray flavor that lasts a long time, here the fruit notes come out of the nose again - and then it's gone. |

A decent dram where the cask has knocked some of the rough edges off - I suspect had this been bottled at CS it could have been a classic. The price is a little steep, with a hint that something is missing. Would like to try a CS version.

The smoke is obvious as soon as it leaves the bottle - a pleasant smoke (no acridity or bitterness to it). |

A slightly oily mouthfeel, the smoke is less obvious on the palates, although it comes back at the death, apricots, compote, some sweetness. The cask seems to have tamed the spirit slightly. |

[June 2024] A quick review of a small sample... ...which is another "designed" Ardbeg release of average-quality only. To be honest, I prefer the independent bottlings with straight Ardbeg that is not tampered with. Ardbeg is best when it can show its beautiful profile without distractions like fancy wine casks or toasted oaks.

So I think it's successful, the Sauternes influence offers a certain extra, whether the extra price compared to the Ardbeg Ten is justified in the end remains to be seen

Islay Dettol Ardbeg’s Anthology series contains three releases: The Harpy's Tale, The Unicorn's Tale, and The Beithir's Tale. We are tasting the first, a thirteen-year-old Ardbeg created by bringing together malt matured in classic ex-bourbon casks and Sauternes wine casks (which makes this quite a unique Ardbeg). Oh, yes, a Harpy is a mythological winged beast that has terrorized Islay in many a legend. Dettol! I think it's the first time I've smelled this so distinctly in an Ardbeg. Nice! Alongside that, plenty of olive oil, citrus peel, smoked fish, and linseed oil. Add some green wood to that, as well as some vanilla, and you have a pleasant, albeit somewhat atypical, nose. I wonder aloud where the peat has gone… It is softly oily and surprisingly fresh and sweet. While the smoke is well-developed and sweet-sour peat is now definitely present, I mainly taste sweet-sour fruit like grapefruit and apricots, while a hint of eucalyptus gives it a fresh lift, and herbs and a touch of balsamic vinegar try to make it dark, if you know what I mean. Tasty? Certainly. But really quite a tad strange for an Ardbeg. Of course, that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. In the finish, too, it is the sweet-and-sour peat that provides a pleasant, warm smokiness, while the sweetness slowly fades away. A unique Ardbeg, that much is certain. I thought it was cool, but I have tasted much better ones as well.

Of all the sweet dessert wines that are used for whisky, I generally tend to gravitate towards Sauternes anyway, and this Ardbeg is no exception.

There’s an appetite for all things rare on Islay. Especially at Ardbeg. You’d think that the rare nature of our whisky would be enough, but it’s Islay and her oddities that really stir us. The Ardbeg Anthology Collection is inspired by tales of unbelievable encounters – legendary brushes with the strangest creatures ever purported to stalk Islay. Inspired by the seldom-seen Harpy – a winged beast said to inhabit Islay – this legendary edition is a first for the Distillery. The Harpy’s Tale has been matured for 13 years in rare Sauternes wine casks and married with classic Ardbeg ex-bourbon. After over a decade in the cask, soaring smoke swoops into sweetness as Ardbeg’s unmistakable character wrangles with the richness of the Sauternes casks. A supreme aged expression… the taste almost as sensational as the tale…

Very distinctively oily, with touches of extra virgin olive oil, sweet briar wood, aromatic herbs (coriander & sage) and a suggestion of smoked lemon peel. A splash of water releases more oiliness, like linseed oil, a gentle waxiness, and a burst of perfumed, aromatic carbolic soap, and finally, a whiff of crème brulee. |

A soft, oily, mouthcoating texture leads into a rich, sweet, smoky palate, with hints of oak moss, treacle, aniseed lozenges and a lovely, sweet, woody/balsamic flavour. This is then followed by smoked apricots and eucalyptus oil. |

The whisky as a whole is not bad, although the palette of derivatives is quite standard and rather minimalistic, there are no shortcomings other than wateriness in the taste, but there are also no pronounced advantages - high-quality, solid, too standard or something.

Intense but not overpowering peat, herbaceous, mossy, dry earth, then the influence of Sauternes emerges. But it's not perfectly balanced, fermented fruit, slightly acidic mirabelle plums. With a little water, it softens, icing sugar, candied banana, pomegranate. Beeswax. Vanilla pastry cream, rum baba. It's ethereal, but also mineral, quartz, slate. Candied lemon. On the palate, it's oily, almost thick, the peat is discreet, few spices. Liquid honey, white peaches, green pears, olives. Long and powerful finish, charcoal, cola, slight bitterness, mahogany bark, dried asparagus. I'm a little disappointed; it's not so common to have an Ardbeg of this age, and it's not particularly successful. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2025/11/ardbeg-anthology-13-yo-harpys-tale.html

Very good Ardbeg! Strongly smoky, peaty, and at the same time delicately, pleasantly sweet with honey and caramels, there is also what I like in whisky, a lot of fruit, both sweet ripe apricots, but also bitter orange, with grated lemon peel, with a very pleasant ash-cyrus finish. The graphic design is also beautiful, in the form of a box with motifs: fairies?, elves?, mythical characters from fairy tales?
