I know Balvenie have their own floor maltings, but have difficulty somehow finding a dram that really provides some charisma with this peat added.

If they wanted to make a different take on a peated whisky, then I think they have succeeded! I found this original, complex and above all, I really enjoyed this. Examplary for other Speyside distilleries who are thinking about going onto the smoky side. One of the pleasant relevelations of my tasting sessions in this year.

| Нос | 88 | Fresh fruits and fragrant scents in the initial scents with lots of apples (flambeed with calvados) and smoked pears. The peat is restricted, but well integrated in the spirit. Not so much a bonfire on the beach on a windy day, more a cosy fireplace indoors. The fruity peat is complemented by vanilla cream pudding, confectioner’s cream, the blackened hard crust of a freshly baked bread. Then it takes a backwards turn towards a car repair shop. We have motor oily, ironwork sparks, graphite, maybe even old tyres and car interiors. In between are lovely scents of butterscotch cookies. Sounds pretty weird, but the interplay between the fruits, pastries, the hearth, and all kinds of things from the garage is utterly pleasing. We also have hints of smoked pineapple, a few distant herbs, butter, and a hint of smoked ham. A quite complex nose, which even becomes slightly mouldy (in a good way). |
| Вкус | 87 | Just as the nose, the palate opens into the orchard with freshly picked apples and pears and very pleasant peat smoke. A mouth full of distant bonfire smoke, slightly ashy, before we enter the garage. Iron dust, wet wood, car parts, motor oil, brake fluid, hint new rubber tyres, and new car seats. In particular the metallic notes remind me in the distance of Ben Nevis. The balance is beautiful, while the complexity is enhanced with fragrant flowers like roses and violets, and orange peel. It does feel like an sunny autumn saturday sitting in the garage, which looks out over the orchard, enjoying the fruits of an afternoon of picking aples and pears, with a fresh cup of orange-flower-flavoured tea on the side. |

Smoke more intensely only during the first few shots. Then the smoke subsides. Overall very pleasant to drink. Smoke does not dominate, but only very pleasantly complements the character of Balvenie. A successful, relatively complex affair and an interesting counterpoint to the classic Balvenie without a significant influence of peat. I definitely recommend giving her a chance.

From the nose I would have located it to Islay, more precisely to Kilchoman (but less cute): a smoldering and smoking piece of wood, like a campfire, very soft. In addition, some honey and a diffuse fruity note (light grapes?). Behind it every now and then a touch of vanilla and an association with hay. Woody and spicy in the mouth with a bit of ash, unfortunately relatively thin. The finish is surprisingly mild and watery with predominantly ash and wood with minimal undifferentiated sweetness and fruit in the background. Over time, the impression changes in the direction of dark chocolate. Length: 5/10 The nose was still very promising, but after that it looks too thin and replaceable (reminds me a bit of the Ileach). But if the Islay malts are too distinctive and "in the face", this could be better served. Grade: 2

to be honest; i do not really like it! and I really thought I would, but I cannot find any harmony in this whisky. having said that I must say that it´s well made stuff, just not my cup of tea. so I leave it to others to rate this whisky. edit. had a second approach today and found it better than yesterday especially on the palate. actually I have to admit that I quite liked the taste, so I might delete these notes after a third try and write something completely different ;-) 87/100 for today

"This has that typical Balvenie-vanilla note, the smoke harmonizes with it, but unfortunately a bit pungent on the nose. In the taste a little too stormy. Lots of oak and lots of alcohol. In the finish rather out of round. Although no youth, but somehow not well done. With water, the stinging is gone and the malt is much better "

As soon as you add water the peatiness almost goes into the liquor and becomes more homogenised, more diffused into the other flavours. And that's when you really notice what a skillful balancing act this is in that the producers have not allowed the peat to completely dominate and call all the shots here."

I do have to say I'm not a big fan of this bottle. It's surprisingly "harsh" for just 48.3%, there is something in the taste which makes it not very pleasant to drink, it kind of burns your tongue. I already have the bottle open for a couple of months now and it still didn't get better, but will try to keep it longer and will see what happens

Bought following a highly successful foray into the Glenglassaugh peated octave bottling. Nose promising: complex given time to breathe, all the elements of ex-bourbon casks. Promising sweetness, vanilla, fruitiness, hint of pear, occasional linseed/ putty, touch of acidity – balsamic. Some smokey dark honey/ chocolate notes The peat is subtle at first – low phenols (compared to Islays) and enhancing the malt rather than the main show – they’re all slightly dominated by damp earth , dunnage notes.In the mouth, the sweetness is short – bitter/dry notes quickly take over. There also a nip of heat. This is a savoury malt and the malt itself has a savoury character that comes through… I like the 48% - most of my drams are cask strength and I don’t usually add water – So far I’ve found that 25ml shot is improved by a small teaspoon of water. This opens it up and also knocks off the heat from the alcohol.There’s a short-medium finish that plays out the peat and also reminds me of a decent rich English real ale.

Self-willed, especially the chamomile is somehow exciting, but unfortunately has the nose and the mouth a bit musty that I do not like it.

Something else. A well-done, well-balanced malt. Earthy, fruity, spicy with sweet accents and really unique smoke, which is very well integrated. The finish is long, fruity, smoky, pleasantly spicy, intense.

Balvenie and peat, a strange combination but one that works really really well. Makes me want to try other peated speysides

- Rauch and Balvenie ? Yes ! and it's a surprise very good special bottling - Normally there is no direct with this name Related to the "RAUCH" theme, but aromatic really recommended - the smoke is very subtle and great in the mild Balvenie aroma integrated - the issue price of approx. 90€ was quite reasonable

Balvenie 2002 Peat Week offers much more subtlety and sophistication than I was initially expecting. The drop off of phenols once bottled down to around 5-6ppm allows to the smoke to form a truly interesting backdrop to more typical Balvenie notes – and boy do they all play so well together. This is not a peat-led experience and its all the better for it. I like it very much! He is well balanced and combines the typical Balvenie character in a convincing way with the smoke. Also: Bang for the buck!

The first breath after aeration is filled with intense muff, followed immediately by an interesting potpourri of well integrated flavors. The peat is the Balvenie very good, present without dominating. Among them are vanilla and yellow fruits, mainly pears. Overall, the flavors are still fragile, this malt is an elegant Leisetreter in the nose. Heat intensifies the smoke and the acid, disinfectant. |

Dark honey with block malt, clearly drying off towards the back, nice tart notes. Everything beautifully interwoven, pleasant to drink. In the second sip, I now find clear fruitiness with a very suitable acidity. A slight tingle on the tongue is noticeable. |

This is a mildly peated Balvenie. I'm not a peat head, but I can handle this quite good. This whisky itself is not overly complex but easy drinking.

Made from 100% highland barley with a phenol count of 30ppm. Also, my first official vintage Balvenie! N: Stoney, earthy/chalky, herbal, woody [US oak], honeyed/hay sweetness and apple yeastiness with light sooty smoke. T: Arrives pokey & prickly yet assertive and slightly astringent. Similar notes to the nose. Turns salty with some cocoa, pepper & clove. F: Smoky oaky vanilla with a bitter-sour metallic finish. Still stoney to the last. Delicate sweeter notes to be found if diligent enough. Some wafer at the death. C: Good enough but hard to love in comparison to the effortlessly joyous Balvenie Double Wood we had alongside.Scores a C

Nice drinking whisky, a typical "smoky" Balvenie, actually fits every occasion, both in winter in front of the fireplace and in summer by the lake.

Medium intensity mainland peat (no Iodine, no salinity), resembles burnt wood and plastic. Honey, toffee, caramel, yellow orchard fruits (think yellow apples), malt, gentle wood and spiciness. Traces of vanilla (clearly not too many first fill ex-bourbon casks were used here), very faint lemon note. Not a stellar success, but far from a failure either. Proper ABV, medium viscosity. OK to try, but not a must have...
