В аромате раскрываются апельсиновая цедра, сливочный ирис, вересковый мёд, засахаренные фрукты и деликатный торфяной дым, к которым добавляются абрикос, гвоздика, дуб и ореховые тона, близкие к марципану; некоторым нос кажется поначалу замкнутым и требующим времени, с лёгкой кислинкой и оттенками ванили и тёмной карамели от бочек. Во вкусе виски полнотелый, плотный и округлый — сушёные фрукты, пряности (перец, имбирь), апельсин, кофе и заметная хересная сладость, — хотя старт бывает пряно-сухим, а дуб временами выходит на первый план с эспрессо-горчинкой. Послевкусие мягкое и долгое у одних, но у других сухое, дубовое и слишком короткое, «монолитное».
Оценки опытных ревьюеров держатся тесно, преимущественно 85–88, что говорит о высокой согласованности: это признанная классика, «универсальный солдат» и обязательный образец для домашнего бара. Основные претензии повторяются и у авторитетных, и у остальных — низкая крепость 43%, из-за которой не хватает мощи и напора, чрезмерная сухость дуба в финале и вопрос завышенной цены (18-летний считают выгоднее 21-летнего, но уступающим 25- и 30-летним). Крайние мнения расходятся сильнее: от «лучший Highland Park, вне конкуренции» (92) до «скорее разочаровывает по соотношению цена/качество» (83) и упрёков в том, что напиток приятен, но не запоминается.

A good dram that unites all. It got the fresh and fruitiness with a richness. Some sherry, some peat, some malt, some of everything. However that's what also bothering me and the low strenght.

My favourite malt of all at the moment. Love the balance between the peat and smoke - almost perfect for me. I feel this is better than the HP21 or HP30 yr old. Such a beautiful drink. Wish it wasn't so expensive to buy here - almost EUR140...

[December, 2013] I found this dram in a commercial advents calendar. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5. I took no detailed notes and never bought a commercial advents calender again.

Nose: a small amount of smoke, some saltyness, caramel, honey, oranges and woodspices like nutmeg and a little pepper. Taste: very full, oranges, spicy (pepper) and nutty. Also a bit too dry tasting as far as I'm concerned. A long (and too dry) finish which is nutty and spicy and very heavy on wood notes.

I guess this is called "heather". Relatively light. Slightly honey, slightly woody, some herbs, minerals. A bit of smoke, a bit of sherry. I guess its alrgight ?Not bad not impressive ?

Marginally better than the HP12 (43%). Similar flavour profile with the flavours slightly more amped up. Certainly hard to justify buying another at the current asking price.

This is the result of an HP tasting yesterday:- 1st -highland-park-30-year-old 48.1% 2nd - highland-park-30-year-old 45.7% 3rd highland-park-25-year-old 48.1% 4th - highland-park-25-year-old 45.7% 5th - highland-park-18-year-old 43% 6th - highland-park-21-year-old 47.5% The 30 year 48.1% is the best but there is little between the 25 year and 30 year offerings. The 18 year is good and better value than the 21 year.

This is pretty forthcoming, easy despite that bit of peat, and IMHO one of the best easy introductions to peated whisky, but sadly it's now priced completely out of its league as a dram.

Nutty and fruity on the nose of apricots / oranges and hay. No smoke compared to the 12. Slightly salty, fruity and slightly smoky in the mouth. Overall - and especially in comparison to the 12 - round and full. In the finish again slightly smoky (less than the 12), dark chocolate and blood orange. Overall a bit "darker" than the 12th. Nice malt and logical improvement of the 12 year old but with a worse PLV. Note 1-

Subtle aromas, heather, honey, subtle sherry influence. After standing for a long time, you can feel a slight amount of smoke. Quite a long finish, with fine flavor, not bitter, very pleasant and balanced. Yes, it is well composed.

On a good day 88p. Vey well-balanced and elegant dram. Suffers from borderline acceptable abv. for reaching a good chunk of its potential but would really great at 50%. Btw. the modern travel retail 18 Viking Pride @46% abv. can't deliver on this promise as the overall balance and elegance is out of whack. I reckon this also goes for the normal new 18 in the wildly embossed bottle, unfortunately.

Maritime peat, brine, creamy malt, nuts, cacao, dried fruits, red fruits, toffee, oak spices, heather honey. Medium finish and the 43% abv is integrated well. Nice balance between the malted barley, Orcadian Island peat and refill sherry casks. If it was bottled at 46+ % and non-chillfiltered it would be better.

Nose: Rich and layered with raspberry preserve, strawberry compote, cherry and blackcurrant over dried figs and blood orange. Honeyed barley, orange zest and cereal malt are joined by coffee, cinnamon and nutmeg, while a gentle heathery peat drifts underneath. Palate: Creamy and surprisingly oily for 43% ABV. Honeycomb, barley sugar and orange marmalade lead into milk chocolate, cherry, peach and blackcurrant. Layers of toasted oak, hay, butter, tobacco and coffee add depth, while subtle heather peat and warming spice weave through the experience. Complex and well integrated, though the low bottling strength slightly restrains the whisky’s potential. Finish: Long and lingering with cocoa powder, walnuts, almonds and sweet sherried notes. Honey, ginger, black pepper and nutmeg persist alongside drying oak tannins and a touch of pleasant bitterness. Overall: A highly complex and characterful Highland Park showcasing the distillery’s trademark marriage of fruit, oak, heather peat and spice. The balance and integration remain impressive, but modern expectations for texture and intensity make the 43% ABV feel increasingly restrictive. A version bottled at 48–50% could be exceptional.

Fairly OK nose, disappointing taste, good finish! It lacks some power, though, which is of course attributed to the poor presentation at 43% and probably heavily filtered. Good whisky but not worth the high price if you ask me.

Good and balanced 18's of Highland Park. I think he was a little stronger, I think. I think it's a very suitable candidate for adding new whisky drinkers, maybe in a tasting session with GlenDronach Allardice and one or two Auchentoshan and a GlenFarclas 18. I do not know why, but I think that might work very well.

The bottom line: yes, it looks like Highland Park is my whisky. No left shades. Complex, cohesive, just in moderation. Smoke does not fall like a chimney. Tasty, fragrant and with a long finish, no failures. Rating: 90.

Heavier, delicate, balanced whisky. Due to the price now (10/2019 - 100 EUR), the price / performance ratio is out of the bowl. It is basically a very good whisky, but despite all that nothing deviates from the line and unfortunately not even extra. Still very good.

This is a special version of Viking Pride. It was bottled for travel retail. Essentially it is the same whisky, but the strength is slightly higher at 46%. The bottle it comes in is the same, but the box is a more luxurious version. As usual, the whisky matures in European oak sherry casks. The prolonged ripening in the mild island climate also adds to the complexity. Viking Pride has already won the title of “Best Spirit in the World” in the Spirit Journal on two occasions. The color is dark gold.

Quite a nice one, actually my favorite in the HP core range. Lighter in all other qualities than peatiness in comparison to my other middle-smoky favorite, namely Springbank. Something in the direction of apricot-liquorice, the famous heather in both the nose and the taste, cupboard-wood, white chocolate, honey, dry sherriness and wafts of smoke around it. Pleasant, would however certainly benefit from a bit higher strength and a decisively lower price.

On the nose, a pure delight made of candied fruits, hardened wood, honey, and various spices. In the mouth, the pleasure continues, with spices, dried fruits and fresh sensation of apples, in addition to the omnipresent sherry! Finish too short, with spices and fruits "again" A superb dram, with however a monolithic finish, to drink late in the evening and keep a full glass for a long time, before savoring it! 2nd: sherry, wood, smoke, spices, fruit compote.

Highland Park's excessive abuse of the Nordic mythology is really putting me off. However, let's review the old HP18, not the Edrington marketing dept. Very dense and round, the nose unfolds with orange peel, creamy toffee and subtle peat smoke. Apricots, heather honey and cloves emerge from the back. After a sweet and sour arrival, the palate develops with a complex array of flavors. Dried fruits, spices and oak take turns with ginger, mint and hints of coffee. Slightly dry and ashy, the medium finish fades. This great malt doesn't need any Viking BS! RATING: 4.2/5.0 stars ≙ 89 pts → FIRST-CLASS [+]

A rich, full flavor is present with aromas of honey and peat. On the nose it has rich aromas of mature oak and aromatic smoke. The palate is soft, round and long.

Nose: PX sherry (moderate), flowery, hints of oak, red berries like red currant, cherries, green bellpeppers!, generally a bit subdued Mouth: super smooth, sherry, red fruits Finish: Some light peat, pepper, red berries, a bit oak influences, warm and medium long Comments: Very round and extremely smooth and easy. Pleasant all around but nothing too deep. Usually i find 43% vol. sufficient but here it feels a tad too weak.

Nose: Honey, lightly toasted white bread. Oranges and apple pie. The sea breeze and a hint of smoke going along with it. Grass and floral notes Body: Medium weight, almost creamy. Taste: Spices and salt, honey and oranges. I also get some pear and apple. Smoke is more prominent now. Finish: Medium length on peppers and salt. Slight smokiness. Verdict: Good value/price. Its savourable, drinkable and has a profile that I believe rarely disappoints.

A balanced highland park located in the lighter aroma spectrum. Unfortunately, something is lacking in strength. Nevertheless, you can deal with it for a while and also find unexpected grades.

One thing in advance: Now you can get it for less than 100EUR and that's where it belongs. A wonderful standard that should not be missing on any shelf. In my early days it completely blew me away. But today it is clear that he can no longer score that high with me. But house whisky anyway.

New bottle, new whisky. Slightly less sherry, but more bourbon notes. Fresh vanilla with a light smoke. The finish is rather short and ending with rather bitter notes.

At 43 %, this automatically falls to the entry level category, but with reasonable quality. Serious whisky seekers should look for better candidate from the older and stronger end of the HP range. Can't find many different aspects to this whisky without risking dilution. It's a mild whisky overall. Ashy peat combined with fresh, slightly citric, pear. That recipe works until you pick up a stronger whisky.

Cream, sherry, sweet smoke, nut chocolate mass, waffles ... Tea with lemon balm ... Taste: sweet and at the same time peppered ... A very complex whisky for which it is best to take some time. Then it tastes really delicious. Sweet and fruity at the beginning, the whisky is smokier towards the end.

Great part, but does it stack up against the 18 Talisker? Is vlt also a bad comparison (except in terms of price). Or against an 18 Bowmore!? If sherry and smoke. I really liked the HP here!

Great HP, the floral notes go well with the sweetness. Alcohol content fits in my eyes well. Beautiful balanced whisky with light bitter notes at the end.

Nose: Difficult to take apart, a burned down earthy note, some vanilla and some orange as well as orange peel, blood orange, slightly burnt caramel and many herbs. Sherry flavors, if any, are very reserved and have not occurred to me yet. A slight bittersweet chocolate note I mean to hear and generally a good to hear acid is persistent to feel. Taste: Subtle sweet with a minimal vanilla, soft with only a very slight tingle. Again, a burnt caramel and an earthy / smoky note can be felt. The sweetness remains and something like apple and light grapes come to my mind, but also the herbaceous aroma front paves the way to my taste buds. In the mouth, I rather think of sherry barrels, if only proportionately low. A bit of bittersweet chocolate, lots of herbs and some blood orange and orange shades make the finish. Real bitterness is not to be found, but the grades he has to offer are interesting. Conclusion: Slightly more vol.% Alcohol would certainly be good for the malt. He does not mess with his flavors and his current price will be responsible for not getting me a bottle.

n: immediately complex with really a nice sherry influence. mild fruits like bananas, apples and pineapple sirup. sunflower oil, linseed oil, mild honey. t: very good! oily mouthfeel with a very smooth body. apple pastry, salted caramel, honey, nuts and spices. great harmony. f: very long and warm, smooooth. comments: a very good whisky, complex and satisfying. I have to admit that I needed quite a while to appreciate the quality of this dram. 89/100

A very good whisky indeed. One that is not completely to my liking, but that it more a matter of preference. Objectively (if there is such a thing) this is a well-balanced and well-rounded whisky.

The nose is grassy, minty with fresh walnuts and apple peel; the taste is perfectly rich, creamy, lightly honeyish with caramel and coffee; the finish is long with some apple and coffee cappucino(sorry for you, CJ!).

Flows nicely into the space with caramel and quite some nice Sherry casks (but they are 'smaller' compared to the classic old 18 yo). Very aromatic outlines which reminisce the old - but it is certainly different; a newer style - but you certainly get the HP-character! At the beginning it is slightly nervous on the nose but getting more integrated and more complex with time. Maybe this will settle down as the bottle is open now. Surprisingly good and intense on the palate. Nice finish. Miles above the actual ones (this is the version that states 'Distillery Manager' on the front label). The Highland Park 18 is for me something like the egg legend Wollmilchsau, a rather soft, tasty whisky with beautiful malty notes, with noticeable, but not dominating smoke and a great sweetness and lethargy from the sherry casks. You notice the age without the oak becoming too dominant. Strong, spicy, dense, always something to discover without being exhausting. I just like that.

The aroma is bright, intense, very clean sea and airy, fragrant sweet hay, sun-warmed flowers, sweet herbs, orange, thin smoke of a dying meadow fire. The taste is buttery-sweet, monstrous medium-strength smoke, grapefruit, dark chocolate, ginger, white pepper. The smoke and pepper warm and fill your mouth. The mid-length finish is clean and subtle, with a little of everything, grapefruit and apple sweetness, and a subtle smoke from a fresh grass fire. Very good and drinkable whisky!

Alcohol: 43% Aroma: Pleasantly polished wood drenched in honey, dried meadow flowers, cake with crumbs, clay, rotten wood, baked apples, heath, orange, cloves. Rich scent, I enjoy it a lot. (88 b) Taste: Malty, with fine peat and a sour trace, but the body is surprisingly thin and watery. Sulfur peeks out in the aftertaste, but fortunately it just emerged and disappeared again. Windy aftertaste, fruity and slightly woody. (84 b) Points: 86/100 Summary: Sample imported from WF2021 in Malá Morávka. An interesting piece, unfortunately with a large disparity between a great aroma and a weaker taste.

After the overall picture, I no longer believe in smoke. An interesting malt that suits my personal taste. Very easy to drink despite all the peculiarities. Notes from a blind online chat tasting. OK, so smoke. Supple and easy to drink, but the sherry casks must have been drained.

Highland Park 18 Year Old is an exceptionally fine whisky that builds on the world-class reputation already enjoyed by the 12 Year Old.
