Lindores Abbey The Casks of Lindores Sherry

Took a chance when this became available. A bit pricey for the age, but it's a new distillery... got to keep the wheels turning, the pots boiling and whatever... My first Lindores, no regrets buying it.

A very mediocre Sherry cask whisky Try a glass, but never buy the whole bottle

It is a new distillery and therefore quite pricey, that is 60€ for 3 years. On the other hand, it reaches a quality and intensity, for which others need 10 years. Probably 2nd fill butts or butts which contained sherry for only a short time. A very nice composition without any age character.

Sweet wood, spicy and a bitter aftertaste

Tasted during the Tasting Whisky Festival Zoetermeer, 21.01.2024 Part of the "Into the Woods" presentation, where not to a surprise, the wood was the main topic.

Second tasting in Dec 2023. First rating was 85 back in Sept.

Unfortunately, this Lindores is too sharp in terms of alcohol, which hides the nicer smells and flavors. Pity.

Smells like slightly sour grape-flavored yogurt. It's easy to think of a Kabalan soloist, but it's very different. There is almost no wood taste. In other words, just by looking at the color, it looks like a whisky like Cavalan with a significant cask influence, but the color seems to be 90% influenced by px sherry, and it tastes like mixing px sherry with low-aged spirit. But it's not bad. In the future, I would like to try a well-aged version of 50 degrees or higher.

He cannot hide his young age in his nose. Sherry is very present and an alcoholic note hovers over everything. A slight turnaround in taste. First of all, a lot of sherry and pepper and surprisingly the whisky is rounder than expected. The taste conveys a good portion of sweetness. With water, the pepper softens a little and makes room for even more sweetness. A modern whisky with a modern sherry influence. Yummy? Yes. I like this sample. Maybe I'll stop by again in a few years.

Like everything else in life, among the new distilleries there is a bit of everything: very promising distilleries and distilleries where, let's say, it is difficult to see how they will carve out a place in the absolutely saturated single malt market. For every Lagg, there is a Kingsbarns; for every Raasay, a Holyrood. Today it is the turn of a spectacular single malt from a distillery whose age stated core range I cannot wait to see stabilized. As is the case with the early releases from new distilleries, it is practically impossible to know what its name actually is or how to differentiate it from other offerings from the same distillery, although it does not reach the ultra-cryptic level of Ardnamurchan or Raasay. On the nose, unique lactic notes dominate this bottle: raspberry yogurt, strawberry milkshake, red berry tart… and lots of juicy red fruits in general. This is about as modern as a sherry whisky can get. Behind all this red-fruit yogurt, we can find sweet milk chocolate, dates, citrusy orange peel, savory beef stew, bitter coffee and chocolate, nuts, sweet dates, herbal oregano or bay leaf, and funky bread dough. The longer I linger on it, the more obvious the funky fermented-milk notes become, something like kefir. This is a very original, full, balanced, intense and (superficially) complex nose for what is, in all likelihood, a whisky of around three years old from what I can read online. On the palate, it is considerably drier and less sweet than it promises. More raspberry yogurt, strawberry ice cream, cheesecake and redcurrant tart, but this time spicy, with a good dose of Talisker-style chili and black pepper. Again very fruity, with candied orange and berry juice; also tart notes like carrot cake; strong vegetal notes such as bay leaf, celery, tomato and eggplant; and very savory notes such as soy sauce. As it leaves, there is an astringency similar to red wine, a touch of milk chocolate, herbs and metal. There is also this funky yeasty feeling that again reminds me of bread dough. Quite hot on the palate, which does not complement the kind of profile they seem to be aiming for. The complexity and intensity of the distillate and the casks cannot hide how young it is. The finish is dry, fruity, funky, and cheesy. Intense tannins and red fruits. Chinese ginger soup and dark chocolate. Candied pomelo and black pepper. Some oyster sauce, almond, brown sugar and raisins. All of it covered, yes, with more yogurt. Long, in your face, a little cloying. A juicy, fruity, spicy, dry, sweet, young, funky, intensely lactic yogurt bomb, if such a thing exists. Similar to Bladnoch in that both probably carry an excessive dose of butyric acid. Despite what it might seem, Lowlands whiskies are not particularly lactic, so this must be a coincidence. It combines these lactic notes, Talisker-style chili, and milk chocolate with modern sherry-style juicy red berries. Very good and very promising, despite its criminally young age, because of the immense personality it shows; there is actually nothing quite like this as far as I know. It is the first whisky I have tried that tastes like yogurt, which can be a little off-putting at times, to be fair. On the other hand, its complexity is rather superficial: although it initially displays a great variety and depth of notes, it does not evolve in any direction regardless of time or water. In any case, there are times when I have a thirst that only Lindores and Bladnoch can quench, I must admit. Amazing stuff.

Lindores Abbey, 3 years, "The Casks of Lindores - Sherry", 49.4% alc. Original bottling (2022). Ageing: Oloroso sherry casks (butts). Nose: Plum cake and dried fruit, as well as soy sauce and oyster mushrooms, which makes the Lindores look a bit dirtier for a moment. The sweetness quickly regains the upper hand and comes along with apricots and figs. Remove some rum balls. Palate: Much less sweet than expected and, above all, much drier. Raisins, dried apricots, dried cranberries. In addition, almonds and pecans, some coffee chocolate and a delicate spice component. Finish: Quite long, gets a decent bitterness at the end. Espresso, dark chocolate, nutmeg. Conclusion: Another really mature looking Lindores. Young and tasty. 85/100 points (2022).

Quick hit review. Sometimes it is hard to hide being disappointed, and in this case I am glad I didn't buy a bottle. Young, edgy and somewhat muted, the nose offers hints of raisins, nuts and peppercorn. Maple syrup and stewed fruits kick off the palate before it turns very spicy and herbaceous, almost reminiscent of an Asian dish. Dry oak, dark chocolate and lingering spices remain in the sharp and slightly bitter finish. This spirit is not ready yet, that's just my 2 cents. RATING: 2.9/5.0 stars ≙ 78 pts → AVERAGE [-]

Great nose, but can't hide its youth in the taste. The 49.4 percent volume conceals very little.

Patience At Lindores they use three cask types as standard: bourbon, sherry and STR wine barrels. To showcase the variety of flavours, they have released a series under the label 'The Casks of Lindores', releasing single malts that have matured exclusively in such a type of cask. This is the 2022 Sherry release, which matured on oloroso sherry butts. The nose is honestly a bit 'ordinary' for a sherry cask. I think that has everything to do with the young spirit. I get some raisins and fresh figs, but that's where it ends. I already get a relatively large amount of wood on the nose, which surprises me somewhat. To taste, it is pleasantly sweet on raisins, plums, figs and black currants. Midpalate there are some wood spices and a handful of nuts. Something like milk chocolate. The herbs suddenly become relatively loud and make the malt a little dry. The finish is relatively long, spicy and drying. It goes up and down like a yo-yo between sweet and bitter. The oloroso sherry casks seem to me to be particularly active, so this young spirit is having a bit of a hard time. But the potential is undeniable. Please be patient.

Overall, it's very subpar, I don't even want to finish this bottle. If the price is NZD 50, then it's fine, but it's around $100. The worst I've tried in this price range.

Dunkle und getrocknete Kirschen kommen zum Anfang. Etwas Rosinen und etwas dunkle Trockenfrüchte kommen dazu. Gewürze und dunkle Schokolade folgen. Eiche ist ebenfalls da. Der Geschmack startet süß und würzig. Eiche und dunkle Kirschen folgen. Dunkle Trockenfrüchte, Gewürze und dunkle Schokolade kommen dann dazu. Ein leckerer, intensiver und fassbetonter Whisky. Fehlnoten habe ich keine. Der Alkohol passt gut. | 86-87 Punkte

This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger. I preferred the sherry, wine, bourbon cask release but this wasn't bad and I'm sure in years to come things can only get better.

this is my first from Lindores. The color is really great. The aroma is a little different than usual. It seems very fruity, almost like cherry, with a subtle wood note. Oh interesting! The taste is not as sweet as it is on the nose. Rather bitter and woody. Something slightly spicy comes out, coupled with a lot of strength, A fairly long finish develops. Very nice!

The Lindores Abbey The Cask of Lindores presents itself as a pleasant and honest whisky with a clear focus on dark, mature aromas. Dark dried fruits immediately take center stage on the nose. These are joined by spicy notes, a touch of oak, and a slightly dusty, musty cellar aroma, giving the whisky an aged and somewhat rustic character. With a little time in the glass, cherries and pipe tobacco also emerge, rounding out the impression nicely. On the palate, it remains true to its character. The sweetness is immediately present without being overpowering. Dark dried fruits are again clearly discernible, accompanied by oak, a hint of pepper, and a pleasant chocolate note. Overall, the whisky is balanced and smooth, without any major surprises, but this is precisely what makes it so enjoyable to drink. The finish is medium-long and remains primarily sweet and fruity. The dark dried fruits linger, accompanied by slightly nutty notes that complement the overall profile well. Overall, the Lindores Abbey The Cask of Lindores is an uncomplicated yet characterful whisky with a pleasant sweetness, dark fruitiness, and spicy wood notes. It's not a loud or extremely complex dram, but rather a comfortable whisky for quiet evenings.
