В аромате — костровой и пепельный дым, копчёный бекон и мясо, морские ноты (устричная раковина, рыбацкая сеть, солёность), поверх которых сладкая ваниль, спелые и красные фрукты, усиливающиеся с каплей воды. Вкус плотный, маслянистый и пряный: соль, перец, лакрица, нашатырь, смола и асфальт, дубовая сухость, ореховая солодовость и лёгкая сладость мёда и красных ягод. Послевкусие долгое и сильное — борьба углей, ванильной сладости и торфа, у многих завершается сухой перечно-дубовой горчинкой. Хвалят силу, цельность, соотношение цены и качества, хорошо встроенный спирт при высоком градусе; многие называют его любимым повседневным Ardbeg, иногда предпочитая его Uigeadail и почти всегда ставя выше «десятки».
Расхождения идут в основном по линии дуба и баланса, а не профиля. Опытные ревьюеры держатся в диапазоне 85–92 с медианой около 88, и оценки согласованы. Very strong and direct peat, fruity sweet, ashen, medicinal. Menthol and pepper. Strong and almost brutal. Islay as a concentrate.

Nose: smoke, pharmacy, iodine, sea breeze, white/light fruits: overripe apples, bananas, white grapes, lemongrass, grilled apples, grilled bacon, slightly nutty and herbal-resinous, vanilla/vanilla pudding, a pinch of cinnamon. Taste: very full-bodied, a mixture of bright fruits and citruses (apples, green grapes, lemon), peat, iodine, pepper and chili pepper, vanilla, brown sugar, grassy notes as if after burning straw. Finish: campfire smoke, peat, lemongrass, apples, resin, grilled sausage/bacon.

Ardbeg - and the hype goes on! Named after a whirlpool north of Jura, Corryvreckan is a NAS core range expression with cracking 57.1% ABV. With its combination of candy floss, orange zest and delicate BBQ peat smoke, the nose starts out promising. On the palate, the dry and spicy arrival is entirely dominated by French oak, followed by a blast of briny peatiness. Unpleasantly bitter herbs and grapefruit creep in, culminating in a peppery-dry finish which is medium at best. Not a complete disaster, but a bit disappointing given the whisky's reputation. No doubts it is a great whisky, however considering its price, I would rather buy Ardbeg 10. A bit less fun for significantly lower price. N: ashy Ardbeg smoke, sweet roasted nuts, T: a lot of spice (oaky alcohol), campfire smoke, sea water, oil, olives, ash F: long, smoky, salty, cigar tobacco

Was reluctant to purchase since I had heard of a drop in quality but the bottle I bought in Duty Free was excellent. A totally unique whisky with a peat which transforms into a wonderful and elusive intriguingly chewy main flavour component which is impossible to define... I wouldn't say this is a fruity whisky, it's all about delicious heavy, industrial minerality... and the saltiness here is very low, and salt along with black tea, which I consider detriments, are not really here... but the old school heavy peat and sweetness so well interwoven make this a wonderfully natural whisky which is vastly superior to the present Ardbeg Uigeadail.

Colour: Gold Body: Full Nose: Even more intense than the Oog. Cough sweets, spicy and herbal, pine resin and needles, light toffee and fudge, lime tang, vanilla sweetness. Sweet sulphurous smoke, working kiln, engine oil, tar, earthy oiliness. Water: More sweetness, more vanilla, more sweet sulphur, sweet orange. More orange after a bit. Taste: Big and intense. Creamy, oily, lots of peat smoke, cough sweets. Developing citrus sweetness with lemon and lots of lime and then building spicy tannins with lots of intense ginger and white pepper. Water: Much softer arrival, building smoke and citrus- Lots of orange and lime but much more creamy. The oak kicks in after a few seconds with lots of spice- Ginger, nutmeg and white pepper with fresh oak. Finish: Long length. Light peat smoke fades with spice staying- Oaky tannins and lime citrus.

I actually prefer this one over the basic Ardbeg Ten (I rate that one higher because of its price/performance ratio). And I do firmly believe, that there are some older whiskies in the bottle. Yet it should be slightly cheaper. And again those fresh oak notes might be off-putting to some people. A combination of sherry and peat (like you have it in Uigeadail) is much more pleasant to a wider audience. I preffer Corryvreckan anyday though. Its truly a whirpool of tase. Those 57,1 % of alcohol make it even better.

People keep describing this as wild and intense, but I actually find it reserved and subdued. Not a peat monster at all; this is rather an Ardbeg Light, with a French oak treatment à la Glenlivet. It seems that this has suffered a significant drop in quality recently. Taken on its own, this is still good modern whisky, but it's nowhere near what it used to be. Can't hold a candle to the Uigedail. The nose is dry and savory, with smoked ham, sea salt and parsley. There's none of the moist and swampy peatiness that the Uigedail displays; this is more herbal and dusty. The dustiness also comes through on the palate: I mainly get crushed herbs and spices here. The smoke is of the "autumnal bonfire" variety, very leafy and twiggy. Really a lot of new-oak feel. Ends dry and bitter, with no new elements.

I am gradually becoming more and more interested in peated malt. Sweet, soft, campfire, smoke, citrus; standard words in my reviews. Maybe I even thought that all those kittens looked a bit alike. Until I tasted the Corryvreckan. Man man man. A world opened, what a nice drink that is. 1/3 Blissful complex smoke with many details in the nose. Vanilla then already breaks through. Iodine, salt and seaweed. Then taste. Charcoal, little resin, more salt. Tingling on the tongue. Late, very late, comes the softness; a little apologetic in the aftertaste is a trace of honey, if you look well. But also licorice and salty licorice. Nowhere sharp or hard despite 57%. Top stuff. 2/3 Because of the preparation - tweet 55+ people - he is now coming in much less quickly. The scent is soft silver and comforting without having to sit in front of a fire in the winter. Iodine in the distance. In the taste there is oak, campfire (dude!) Cherries in the distance, still a lot of peat - but very pleasant. Sharp though, despite the training camp. The peatje is soft, sweet and accessible. 3/3 What a beautiful, modest and promising scent. Not specifically peated or smokey - just men's perfume; oak and some incense. In the taste immediately tobacco, light iodine, salt and indeed, now (peat) smoke. Something of swimming pool and snotty nose and jab in your nose if you dive wrong is also in it. For some reason I have to think about nettles. Interesting, exciting, fickle and with the wild freshness of limes, this one.

Comparing to other Islay whiskies, it is more funky (Without the smoke, it may smell like a Campbeltown whisky). Judging from the nosing, it is not suitable for beginners with such an intense smoke with high ppm. If you like Ardbeg 10, you should definitely try this one too. This is 100% not for whisky beginners. It's mainly for those who like peat monsters with some complexity. Also, I will only drink this when I am in the mood.

The style is more prominent, the sipping touch is particularly strong, and it has a metallic taste. The first time you drink it, it feels like a small bomb exploded in your mouth.

I prefer the Uigeadeal much more. A lot of bitterness which I do not like to o much is finalizing this perfect starting dram. Nevertheless it is an excellent choice for its money. Sláinte! Edit: The second try of this whisky was much better as the bitterness is more or less gone.

COLOR: Gold (without dye) - the smoke aroma is clearly ash, no ham smoke - it tastes like the "big, powerful brother" of the TEN - at that time about 60€ (today about 80€) are quite a good price for the good quality - top representative of Ardbeg's core range and significantly better in PLV than many Ardbeg-Day or other special bottlings... - Definitive purchase recommendation!

Not for the faint of hearted! Hear! Hear! A healthy 57.1 ABV to back that up. This is not just a heavy weight malt by any means. This has depth and complexity as profound as the whirlpool it is named after. Not just a peat bomb. Incredibly well balanced dram.

Smells like smoky wood and burnt grass. A sip and a sniff and the flavor changes to a vanilla creamy sweetness. Oily in the mouth. The sweetness in the mid-palate and the tart smoky flavor after swallowing kept me coming back for more! The alcohol content was so high that I felt like the mucous membranes in my mouth were going to rupture after drinking it.

A very balanced whisky I think. N: Maritime "Beach" notes. Bonfire smoke and smoked fish. Not really medicinal. Also some sweetness. Hints of white fruits in the background. T: Sweet with a solid blast of peat. Some fruitiness kicks in. Citrus. Salty and maritime. Mild coffee and milk chocolate. F: Long and lovely. Spicy. Notes of dark chocolate and gentle peat lingers on. An excellent dram imho. It takes water really well. A teaspoon full for a dram works wonders for me. Brings out a lot of complexity. It is with water it crosses the 90 point line for me.

It's good, can't disagree. However it has an ashy sootines and a bitterish character on the palate that seems not so well integrated and makes it a bit less pleasurable to me than Uige: in Ardbegs core-range Uige is the big one for me. However it is easily understandable that this may really be the kick for someone else.

My 2013 version is very well-crafted. Can't really spot the wine casks used, more like an ex-bourbon version whereas the Oogi is significantly sherried. Good stuff, I reckon not too old as the Corry falls a bit short in comparison with Laga 12 cs where there's a bit more wood influence noticeable. Some folk say quality of Corry has declined, but I'd need to check for myself and buy a recent bottling. That's one problem with NAS, you are not given info if composition has changed towards younger casks involved. If age-stated you could at least guess with certainty that the cask quality itself had changed.

A full bottle review, written over some time: N: An exotic creaminess on the nose suggests there’s more age in this 2012-13 bottle than the Bruichladdich PC8 i have alongside. There appears to be enough steady ‘slow & sure’ wood maturation framed around soft & sweet creamy vanillas and a sweet-sour allium vegetal youthful freshness with a hint of sherried rancio, horse-meat and porcini mushrooms in the background for the anticipation to grow. It’s a vibrant yet also relaxed & inviting nose. The oily phenols permeate the nasal airwaves on opening and remain doing so many months after, accompanied with a burnt-tyre, briny vegetal oiliness - the burnt note a mix of char and a whiff of desirable sulphur notes, it would appear. The smoke remains integrated but never obtrusive. I get further descriptors along the lines of pickled onions & salt n vinegar crisps mixed with crambe maritima/sea kale, moules mariniere, salty eggs [something about the connection between the sea, salt and chip shops going on here], more burned rubber [bands], onion tart and a soft=sweet peatiness. Not sure i’d immediately guess this as Ardbeg straight-off though comparing this with Ardbeg new make from the same period, the similarities are rather profound. Sweet meat, pickled onions [again,] plenty more salted crisps…. it's a busy nose. As time goes on, there are more resemblances to Port Charlotte, some Octomore and even a little shout to Kilchoman too - so this is turning out to be quite the Islay tribute. With an amazingly dry-salty yet vibrant oily-slick & sweet n sour nose - how could anything else but good whisky create such an oxymoronic=phenomena? T: The cask mix is rather tremendous, opening with a [bourbon?] savoury=sweet sea-vegetal freshness, an oaky-creamy smokiness and a well-weighted, fruity [sherried?] body - the mix making sure this concoction remains youthfully savoury-sweet [bourbon?] balanced with [a sherried?] older element. Now it’s an oak=oily=peated, ashtray=bonfire-smoked malt with a truly desirable barley body with something of Bruichladdich at its heart and resemblances with the PC8 and its allium-vegetal centre that are most apparent, all with a watered mouth chew. It just falls away on the second half of the palate. F: Those creamy vanillas are back with more action before more smoky/malty-allium/vegetal-peat. There's a dry smouldering oak finish and with Serge’s cider note WF that is spot on - that man is brilliant. Dry bonfire smoke mixed with hot sauna pine wood concludes,….. but then again, the finish isn't finished. There’s then more swirling between the sweet-sour and smoky dry woods, and just when you think the dry smoke is closing up, the sour-sweet vegetal-bourbon vanillas come back for more. For me, that vegetal-sour, sweet-vanilla remains key to Corryvreckan’s appeal. C: A rather decent bottle from 2013 [that thankfully, I have one bottle of left from that year]. I would love to have the opportunity to compare two or three Corryvreckan’s from different years side-by-side - has that been done? Over the duration, I scored this between 88-90, so reasonably i’ll go with 89 - the palate falling away, the decider Blog. Scores a B+

Ardbeg Corryvreckan 57.1% ABV (Bottled November 2017): Expectations were high but the cask influence is too overwhelming for my palate. I’ve seen rumors that the use of French Virgin Oak has increased with recent batches and that doesn’t surprise me one bit based on my tasting. This is still decent whisky but I don’t think it deserves any hype (at least my batch year). Score: 83/100

i love this powerful Ardbeg. I got it as a present and i didn't know this whisky before. now its one of my favourite of all time. normally i add some water when i drink the corry, pure with 57% it can be a bit rude. great value for money!

Smells very medically, very phenolic, you have to like that. A first sip is quite aromatic, spicy, but then comes the cloves, which I simply can not have. Not really convincing.

So this is so soft, very woody, chocolate and, of course, strong enough. Overall, very full and in some ways rounded, it can hardly be said that it would be a peat monster. I think a little like Port Charlotte Scotish Barley.

Nose: Peat, smoked bacon, iodine, candied ginger, golden raisins, baked apples, cinnamon, (cayenne pepper w/ water). Taste: Peat, chili peppers, brown sugar, plums, charcoal, sea salt, smoked fish, oak, leather, tobacco, ash, bacon, wafting smoke. Oily, BOLD! This is a party in my mouth...the kind of Hollywood montage-type party, that begins in a house fire and ends in memorable and enjoyable memories. Numbs the gums and flavors continue developing through the long finish. Less of a whirlwind of complexity with water. A collection must.

Nose: Intense peat smoke, sea-salt brine, and medicinal notes collide with sweeter layers of dark chocolate, vanilla sugar, and candied orange, underpinned by an earthy, resinous note of pine needles. Palate: Rich, oily, and mouth-coating, with an immediate rush of sweet, peaty oil. Further waves of cracked black pepper and savoury smoked bacon and cured meats give way to coal tar, bitter almonds, smoked fish, and the intense, aromatic smoke of burning applewood. Despite its power, everything is remarkably well integrated and highly flavourful, with no off-notes detected. Finish: Exceptionally long, powerful, and dry, leaving lingering traces of pepper sauce, ash, and tobacco, balanced by a final touch of chocolate-coated cherries. With water: A few drops tone down and smooth the intensity, but also reduce some of the concentrated power that makes this whisky so compelling. I strongly prefer it at full strength. Overall: A brilliant whisky. Huge, uncompromising and intensely flavourful, yet remarkably well integrated. The combination of oily texture, sweet peat, coastal brine, medicinal smoke, savoury meats, tar, spice and dark sweetness creates tremendous depth without producing a single distracting off-note. Powerful but composed, complex yet coherent, and exceptional at full strength.

The smoked beef jerky flavor/salty rich peat flavor is so good... A while ago, I thought I would like something with a lighter body, but after drinking this, I changed my mind. Drink this again and evaluate it.

The Corryvreckan was brought in to replace the much lamented 1990 vintage. Thankfully this is a powerhouse classic Ardbeg that draws on a multitude of cask styles for its recipe. It is oily, thick, sweet, medicinal and tarry with rich phenols and smoke.

Classic standard bottling from Islay. The alcohol is well integrated without being too much and the same goes for the peat. I prefer this over Ardbeg 10, despite the lack of age on the label.

(2012 bottling) N:- Oyster shell, sea sand and fishing net filled the glass with distant smokes, balance with whiff of new leather. Kippery and strong marine character with hints of vanilla. A class. P:- Oaky dry with abundant of sweet malt and roasted salted nuts. Intense with chewy tannin grape skins. Great depth and firm structure. Refine smokes of burnt vanilla and whiff of medicinal notes plays its part at the back. Entertaining. F:- Bold and spicy, dark bitter chocolate with waves of tarmac at the tail. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

L60999 05.01.15 nose heavy smoke, is carried by a beautiful sweetness (such as cane sugar with a little vanilla), clear tree resin (pine, fir or similar), rosemary, rose water / marzipan, there is dark milk chocolate, red pepper, some dry bitterness (walnut / Brazil nut ), Lemon zest, fresh European oak in the background, some not sweet dark berries (sometimes currant, blackberry or cranberry), now and then Bowmore cowshed, very full the whole, does not look old, but mature, no disturbing youth, the light Rosé hue suggests that the (few?) Used wine barrels were fresh, water brings out vanilla taste Fierce! first the strong smoke, followed by a strong dry, slightly bitter and oaky spice, the pepper is there, the resinous note is present and goes well with the brown sugar, which sets a counterpoint to this heavy spice, which literally crackles in the mouth, as if I spoon the muscovado from the base of my ristretto, dark chocolate, dark caramel, the berries accompany the whole, with water mineral, tingling leaving Smoke, spicy oak, dry, smoked bacon, resin and some chocolate, very long (especially the resin), and at the very end again hints of berries (slightly dry and sour) Very big malt, even if there is already a scooter coaster, the Corryvreckan would not give a worse ride. What's going on in the mouth, really neat. The nose is excellent, the onset fierce, after the nose I would have liked more berries, but compensate for this great resinous note and the muscovado. I think he can tolerate water, but he does not need it, but the spice is "broken down", the European oak is clearer, vanilla and berries get through better, liquorice is added, not quite as violent and explosive, but still incredibly intense

Deceptively light on the nose and then a strong peaty & sweet kick on the palate. This is an expression that gives strong emphasis on medicinal flavours. In my pre-historical scoring method, it's a 9/10.

The aroma is heavily smoked fruit with vanilla and coffee cake. In a strong and rich taste, bananas and smoked meat with cherry sauce. The finish is long, slightly sweet, smoky licorice. An absolutely gorgeous release, in which, with fairly simple derivatives, the degree and mix of alcohols is perfectly matched, a bottle for all occasions. RATING: 88pts - | 87 - 89 (B +) → Great | - Always nice to have a bottle of this.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan Category: Single Malt Manufacturer and bottler: Ardbeg Distillery (LVMH) Region: Islay Fortress: 57.1% Volume: 700 ml Bottling date: 07/29/2019 Min. age: no indication Filtering: no Dye: none Nose. Powerful, direct, but rustic. Lots of smoky, marine flavors, lots of spices, some medicine and very little fruity sweetness. At first it is a little closed and knocks down the nose with alcohol, but then it opens with tones of creosote, ammonia, camphor oil, salted ship ropes, iodine, Vishnevsky's ointment, motifs of burnt white bread (toast), baked chestnuts and baked potatoes, smoked bacon. Spices such as pepper, nutmeg, anise, cloves periodically come to the fore and occupy the entire space of the aroma. Only subtle nuances of vanilla, dried prunes and blackcurrant add sweetness to the nose. Taste. Oily, extremely rich, pungent, even extreme. It starts with a little citrus-honey, vanilla sweetness, to then literally drag you into a whirlpool (hence, apparently, the name was chosen) of coals, creosote, sea salt, iodine, grapefruit partitions (its white part), black ground and chili pepper, richly spiced meat steak, anise, camphor, coffee grounds, tobacco. This burning mixture softens a little (just a little bit, so don’t expect to be released from this abyss) dark berries (black currant and cherry, blueberry and blueberry) and dark chocolate on the background. Aftertaste. Long. Bacon with black pepper, black cherry, camphor, ash. Summary. Angry, vigorous whisky for hard lovers, the ultimate expression of all the "dark" sides of Ardbeg aged distillate. The use of mainly virgin oak alcohols in the “batch” gave the final product a powerful peppery profile, but removed all the space, complexity of taste and aroma inherent even in an ordinary “ten”, but not this whisky. The result was an extremely powerful whisky, well made, but simple, extremely unbalanced. For me, this is more of a minus than a plus, so for myself I prefer Uigeadail or Ten. Rating: 86 out of 100.

28/09/2022 94 / 100 Color: Dark gold, natural. AROMA - 22.5 / 25 Very complex and pleasant. An autumnal bonfire, charcuterie dried over the fire, and old wood. Further, prunes and smoked mackerel, and underneath, the sweetness of vanilla, leather, and baked apples. The alcohol is well hidden in the smoke, and there's plenty of smoke. TASTE - 23.5 / 25 A burst of sweetness and wood. Instantly, it chills the tongue and floods the palate with a wave of smoke. Later, fresh, exotic fruits and our own, dried ones take center stage. Further along, we find salted caramel, walnuts, smoked meats, aged honey, and dark chocolate with coffee. There's also, of course, vanilla enhanced with a touch of anise. FINISH - 24.5 / 25 Full of flavor, full of smoke and very long. BALANCE - 23.5 / 25 One of the first smoky whiskies to make a huge impression on me, and for that reason, I think I'll always have a fondness for it, alongside Uigeadail. Truly well-balanced and worth exploring.

At first it took me some time to come around to the Peat side of scotch. This version was highly recommended and since then, it has been harder to come by. I have appreciated it now that I have learned that you need to savor the flavor on this one for a good two three minutes to get the full span. If you were to just pour and sip and drink down like it was juice, you would lose so much of the work that went into this beauty, enjoy if you can find it.

Less balanced than his boyfriend, tested after him, he is I think more interesting.Sa spicy mouth probably comes from a poorly integrated alcohol cons. He really has character and is more explosive.

Intense, powerful, wild. That's the best way to describe him; the several times mentioned sea storm is here program. However, he also owns a fine, almost delicate side, which only gradually opens up to one. These two facets are what I think make this malt so exciting. This is a whisky that requires dispute and does not reveal itself the first time. Malt tip!

It is still interesting as the years go by it but less that it use to be. 6 or 7 years ago when I had my first bottle I enjoyed it much more comparing with Ardbeg 10YO. There were more flavours in it, the higher ABV helped also. Nowadays, most probably from the lack of the casks hs305 mentioned, I would say overall they are quite even. Less flavours (and harsher on the palate) for Corryvreckan, ABV helps it to keep the level.

Bottle Wrap-up Review Overall: "Pete is the NAS's cheat code." Although this is not about Ardbeg, even when considering distilleries that produce both non-peated and peated whiskies, peated products within the NAS lineup very highly likely mask most of the downsides of a short maturation period. In fact, the strong lingering peat can even become an attractive feature; since aging the same spirit for a longer period adds subtle layers, peat is a cheat code that defends against low aging in both low and high maturation scenarios.

Color : Gold Nose : Beautiful peat, on the cold ashes mixed with cereals, oat cake. Marks medicinal, and citrus in the background. The water brings him more iodized notes and becomes more mineral. Mouth : Smooth attack on peat, cold ashes and medicinal notes. Evolves on the citrus fruits, especially lemon. The water succeeds him also on the palate, soothing the peat and bringing a little complexity on camphor and cereals. Long enough final on iodized notes then cold ashes again.

(bottled 27/07/17)Bottle has been open for a year and is almost empty now. First time i opened it and sampled the whisky i was impressed. Its intense, rough, full-on, grabs you by the balls. It sweares and curses and you believe it. After i got to know it better i was getting more dissapointed every dram. It showed it's flaws and shortcomings. And all the swearing and cursing suddenly came from vulnerability. It was sharp, overly oaky, where is the balance in this monster?! There are not that many things going on, they're just really loud.. Now that the whisky has mellowed over time i'm liking it a bit better again. It's not bad, i do like the style, but i dont think it is worth the praise it still seems to get. Wish i knew how good 'the old' corryvreckan was! Neat: thick and creamy. smells like sticking plasters, bandade, oak(spices).. a lot of it. very dry. Orange skins, ginger and some salty, smokey/ashy, seewead going on. Less peat than expected. With water it gets a bit sweeter and a more smokey.

In the beginning, It's didn't power imagination of 57.1ABV powerful, but the strength is slowly, deeply, quiet, warm like the whirlpool, and the surprise is balance of the peaty and sweetness with long finish.

It has a relatively oily viscosity and its bouquet is of relatively strong intensity. I have aromas of citrus fruits, maritime notes, pleasant peat smoke, vanilla, caramel and malty sweetness. Moderately complex. Relatively dry in taste. The alcohol is well integrated and has a relatively heavy body.

After a few drop of water, complexity of the whisky increased very well. It's a good example of the punchy/fiery peat whisky with tons of sweet notes. Also it's a real bargain with current price.

Sweet fruits, baking spices, a little bit peat smoke notes on nose. Peat smoke, green apples, pepper, dryness from oak cask, resin notes on taste. The long finish starts with pepper, and goes with peat smoke, oak cask and vanilla notes. I like it very much! It has the good combination of sweet, peat smoke and oak notes.

[March, 2017] Another Ardbeg re-taste: When the first Corryvreckan was released I found it not just a very interesting dram with a new, never before tasted profile (due to its share of virgin oak matured malt) but it became my favourite modern Ardbeg too. And I scored it 88 points. Today I tried a recent bottling of the Corryvreckan and - what a disappointment: It is rather unbalanced and with a slightly drying/bitter finish (not as extreme as with the recent TEN or Uigeadail, but still unpleasant). I guess Ardbeg increased the share of virgin oak matured spirit in this recipe significantly and this higher proportion of heavy tannins (and lower share of sweet bourbon flavours) harm not just the balance but the mouthfeel too. This is most probably due to the problem that LVHM has difficulties in sourcing enough bourbon casks from the US. The Scotch whisky boom came at a time when the US whisky industry was in deep recession - so the Scotch demand for used bourbon casks was and still is much higher than the US distilleries can supply. As a consequence the Scottish distilleries cut down the maturation times to use the same cask more often (and mask this by introducing NAS whiskies) AND (as this was not enough) they had to use virgin oak casks in addition. For sure they market this as an intentional strategy, nevertheless it is pure despair. But what can you do if you do not have enough good quality casks at your hands? The outcome is devastating (at least to my taste buds) but hopefully they create a new followership among all the new whisky aficionados that do not know how good Ardbeg and all the other great drams once tasted (without heavy tannins)...

The combination of Smoke Islay with sweetness, which is perfectly balanced and productive, matures. If the whisky was music, this would be a metal cover on Dvorak. Super, I enjoyed it only if it was not so expensive. Compared to the 10y, it is not so rough, it works rather smoothly and evenly.

Color Pale strawNoseQuite a delightful bacon smell initially. later on this develops further in quite a lot of peat, ash and smoke. This together with some sweet vanilla and fruits, which becomes more pronounced with a drop of water. TasteStrong and spicy on the mouth, ashy and smoky with vanilla and some garden fruits. Also still very meaty. It gives a nice extra next to a standard Ardbeg 10, still my favourite daily dram. FinishQuite long and lingering. a nice battle in the mouth is going on between the charcoals, the sweet vanilla and the mighty peat. CommentsQuality dram, i prefer it with one or two drops of water, which allows more of the sweetness to show itself.

Smelling some smoke, dark fruits. Nice aroma around my nose. Taste is really strong, raw, alcohol, charcoal, bottom burnt soup, apples in the background. The best part is aftertaste, long less peat more fruit. When this whisky gets more air the better, but it does not save it.

Too heavy on the virgin oak vanilla sweetness for my liking. Not bad, but I'd take the TEN or Uigeadail over this any day. One of the whiskies that makes me realize what Serge Valentin is so often talking about wrt. "too much wood", or however he puts it.

One of my favorite core bottlings of Ardbeg! I had a couple of bottles in the past and I remember the very first time I have tried it. It struck me like a lightning from a clear sky! I love cask strength whiskies, I love Islay whiskies and I love Ardbeg. The combination is just incredible, it works out very well, its full flavor is very enjoyable if you like peaty/smoky stuff. Since then it became one of my favorite bottles for a reasonable price. I also have to admit that the current/newest bottle seems to be a bit different than the older version I had about 4 years ago, but maybe I have changed too much meanwhile and my palate evolved with trying some other beautiful drams. Anyway, it's still a solid thing to go for!

As a replacement for the much-loved 1990 Airigh nam Beist, Ardbeg Corryvreckan had some pretty big shoes to fill, but the good news is that this is a belter, winning World`s Best Single Malt Whisky at the World Whisky Awards 2010 and Best No Age Statement Scotch from Jim Murray`s Whisky Bible.

The smell, despite the intense smoke, is milder than I would have expected; I feel comfortable. The start is so powerful that it makes me forget the mild smell. This is a whisky to warm up after a stormy autumn walk. The very long finish is warm and intense.

The peat hits the nose like an explosion. Thick smoke, iodine, ash, a hint of camphor, ether. With the addition of water, vanilla emerges. The whole is very balanced, slightly spicy. On the palate, it's still very peaty, with pepper, clove, oil, a touch of lemon, and vegetal notes that come through strongly in a thunderous and very long finish. I detect chicory on the retro-nasal. It's less subtle than the Uigeadail, closer to the Ten in terms of flavor, but much more powerful and complex. C: Amber N: Peat, smell of gasoline and camphorated oil are never vanishing and prominent scents; other than this we had sweeter, fruit-like sensations, Williams pears and grapefruit, to go with a cough syrup. The addition of some water makes the distillate a little bit more marine, gaining in salty and spicy character. P: Peat is aggressive and pleasant at the same time. Typical bitter vegetable tastes, like roasted chicory, and smoked herring characterize the distillate, together with some blueberry-like sweetness; it gets savory with the addition of water, increasing the alcoholic strength. Body is viscous. F: Not too long; sensations bring us back to the palate, smoked fish and peat, with a note of licorice. Ardbeg is ever an Ardbeg and this Corryvreckan makes no exception, the alcoholic section is well balanced and all tastes are perfectly amalgamated. This Ardbeg can be very attractive for a lot of young minds around the World 86,5/100

This wine is like Ardbeg Ten's barrel strength, the overall style is fresh and lively, and the wine is strong, but the obvious irritation in the mouth exposes the younger age of the wine. Both the richness of taste and the taste are slightly inferior to Uganda.

One of my favorite Ardbeg expressions. According to the whisky ambassador, it's matured in 1st fill European oak sherry casks and 2nd fill bourbon casks.
