very tasty malt and very special for a glendronach. Despite the smokiness, the typical sherry is not neglected and is always present. Very tasty and balanced. Find the PLV very good with this malt.

В аромате обычно отмечают явный портвейн и сладость — вишня, слива, малина, ирис, клубника, земляные и шоколадные тона под лёгкой дымкой, местами с бензиновым или пепельным оттенком; нос чаще нравится и кажется многообещающим. Вкус разочаровывает сильнее: дымный, сладкий, с тёмным шоколадом и косточковыми фруктами, но тонкий, водянистый, спиртуозный не по годам и двумерный; несколько авторов отмечают, что при 46% напиток пьётся горячее и жёстче ожидаемого. Послевкусие короткое-среднее, суховатое, с дубовой горчинкой и миндально-вяжущими нотами.
Главная и почти единодушная претензия — молодость и несращённость: торф и солод не соединены, дистиллят сырой, характер винокурни неузнаваем, хересной глубины прежних версий нет. Опытные ревьюеры формулируют это резче всего (зачем хересной винокурне вообще браться за торф; спирт слаб), но их оценки не строже общих — разброс у обеих групп схожий, в основном 78–86. Отдельные высокие отзывы хвалят баланс, соотношение цена/качество и то, что херес не потерян под дымом, а один автор ценит именно портвейновое влияние и сладость, признавая, что напиток не для всех; итоговое согласие — крепкий, дешёвый, но нецельный и вторичный на фоне BenRiach Solstice.

This whisky starts with rather good impression but then degrades gradually: good nose with obvious port, weaker and somewhat sour palate and indistinct aftertaste with too much of oak on my taste. It was interesting to taste a sample but I wouldn't run to a shop for a full bottle of it.

Edit: Might have been a bit to hard on this one the first time around. I gave it 80 points. I would like to change that to 82 points. It's still not incredible, but it has opened up a bit after some time in the bottle and a bit of sweetness has come forth. For me a peated whisky needs layers to work well- it needs those underlaying flavours of bacon, honeyglace, barbecue or sherry to make it something other than just smoke and ash. This whisky doesn't have any of that. It lacks the trademark of that deep glendronach sherry and turns out to be a relatively simple and boring mouthful of smoke. Doesn't taste bad. Just lacks depth.
Too young, the 6 yo bourbon base distillate is slightly weak, but the issue can be enjoyable.

Not bad, not great. The juicy fruit on the nose is nice, but the relatively tannic finish hurts it. It could have done with a fair bit more peat too. A bit disappointing, to be honest.

An unusual Glendronach that would not have been assigned to this distillery. The port influence is also noticeable, which cannot be said of the distillery character. I like port ripening, which is why I prefer it, especially in combination with the sweetness. But is certainly not for everyone.

Well, it's okay, and it's cheap to boot. Is it really necessary when you're already a well-known and acclaimed distillery that's got nothing left to prove ? That's something else to discuss. It's kinda whacky, there's no integration of the various notes into a cohesive whole. I had better memories of the BR Solstice.
Simplified review: Nose: Sharp on the nose, there's peat smoke but it's like the alcohol and the peat are not integrated, very young-ish. Not much body in the glass, quit thin. Taste: There's (some) peat and there's a spirit driven too young Glendronach here. Quit two dimensional, thin in taste and lacks thickness in the mouth. Short finish. I do like peat and portwood and it's a combination that can work well.... however this is much too young, two dimensional and lacks any complexity in my opinion. A Glendronach can be very good, even magical but this (new) pathway they took is rather questionable.

So I don't really enjoy this Glendronach. First of all, the alcohol is not well integrated into the whisky. The smoke is strangely woody. And the aftertaste is bitter with almonds. Otherwise I would say sour cherries, plums, spices, smoke and wood.

Glendronach Peated Portword 10yo, 46%. Consumed after watching Scotland beat England at Twickenham. Aroma is candy floss, pink mice sweets, something slightly vegetal and raspberry behind a touch of smoke and perhaps petrol. Taste is big on the smoke, raspberry ripple sweets, raspberry infused white chocolate with chilli, drinks above the abv it has some definite heat to it. Disproportionate heat. Rounded balanced smoke and salty. It's okay - the taste comes together well enough but it's hot and not complex. A slight acrid note builds - not burnt, more apple-like. The aroma is milky and muddled. The smoke is certainly pleasant but it's been let down on the whole and this is not a cohesive dram. If I were rating this purely on classiness and clarity/execution of concept it would be a pretty low score. But ignoring these issues and focusing on the end result, it is good enough for a score of 3.25/78
This GlenDronach is very promising on the nose. Almost like a full term maturation in port casks. But the palate tells a different story. This malt seems quite young and partly immature, the alcohol is a bit to snarky on the palate for 46% ABV. Therefore the finish is quite short although quite medium due to the smoke. For the initial taste you wouldn't mistake this malt for a GlenDronach (like they used to be in the sherry versions). Concerning price/performance ratio: 6/10

-from a sample- Well it's certainly not boring, that's for sure. A Dronach that's as far as you can get from it's usual game, it's several things at once, not too integrated - for better of worse. You can approach the peat and the port pipe influence separately, the underlying character of the distillate is tricky to access though. It's a big malt dressed in a very fancy jacket, which is a bit loose here and there. The concept appears wacky, but for some reason, I'm enjoying it. Somewhat pricey if you're on a budget.

[January, 2018] Just a quick review from a sample. I did not like the peated Glendronach 8-years old "The Hielan" so I am sceptical about this one, too. Right, this is not what I like. The peaty and the barley flavours are not really integrated and the whole dram tastes somewhat immature. The wood is too bitter for my tastebuds and the finish gets very adstringent. It seems as if Glendronach as a malt cannot stand heavy peaty flavours and by the way: Why the hell should one of the best Highland malt distilleries that is famous for its adorable sherry cask maturations do peated malt at all? Is it greed or Zeitgeist? In Germany we say "Schuster, bleib bei deinen Leisten!" (Cobbler, stick to your last!)...
